Hill Country Family Services (HCFS), a 501c3 nonprofit agency, is dedicated to strengthening families in crisis to enhance wellbeing and foster self-sufficiency. Services include food and temporary financial assistance with utilitites, rent, prescriptions, clothing and other types of emergency family support. HCFS has served Kendall County’s most vulnerable families since its founding 25 years ago.
A Success Story!Marcos is a success story and HCFS is proud to say we are a part of his success. Marcos (name changed to assure privacy) a senior in high school, found himself homeless in February 2010. Marcos and his mother came to HCFS for temporary assistance with food, shelter and transportation. His mother, a Mexican citizen, related that Marcos was an American citizen whose father had died when he was quite young. In his high school years, Marcos mother returned to Mexico but Marcos chose to remain in Boerne to make it to graduation. He survived by sleeping on the couch of acquaintances and working nights to pay the rent and feed himself. After work he tried to find a quiet corner to do his homework and often found himself getting to sleep at 3am. Unfortunately, his partying friends tired of the "role model" in their midst and Marcos found himself "out on the streets". HCFS provided Marcos and his mom with food, temporary shelter and transportation. HCFS then found a local family who opened their home to him so he could earn his diploma and graduate. Moreover, this generous and loving family mentored him and nurtured his dream of graduation and attending culinary school. Here's what he wrote in his senior essay: "No home, no hope and no future.....Those were the thoughts that ran through my mind as I found myself on the street with no home, no bed... Seventeen years old, alone, scared and homeless. Where was I to go? What was I to do? At that moment, there were no dreams, nothing but darkness... the strength that I found during those cold nights ...motivates me to continue to strive no matter what the obstacles. I have a dream and I will never give up. I was born in America where everything is possible." |
